I didn’t vote for Jerry Sanders, I was a Donna Freye supporter. However, I wasn’t upset with his win. He’s an honest person that worked hard to bring some dignity to the San Diego police force at a time when the city was struggling with some bizarre issues (Dale Akiki?).
So, it’s not surprising to me that Jerry Sanders did a 180 on Gay Marriage this week when he realized he had to vote with his conscience and not the party line. He will sign the San Diego City Council resolution supporting Gay Marriage in California instead of the expected veto.
This emotional press conference reminds me of the relief a person feels when they come out of the closet and are overwhelmed by the mixed reactions, the freedom from hiding, and uncertainty about future reactions. It’s especially evident when he outs his lesbian daughter.
